Pierre de Coubertin, the father of modern Olympics, had a great desire to make sports for all. He was willing to make everybody a part and parcel of the games and sports. According to him, "In order for a hundred people to take part in physical culture, it is necessary for fifty to take part in sport; in order for fifty to take part in sport, twenty must specialize; in order for twenty to specialize, five must be capable of astonishing feats of prowess."
The credit of fulfilling the desire of Pierre de Coubertin goes to Abebe Bikela, Winner of the marathon in two successive games 1960 and 1964, who excouraged hundreds of people to take part in Olympic run. Olympic Day Run is also the part of Sports for all programme. Every year the IOC requests the NOC to organize Olympic Day Run on June 23 in memory of the founding of modern Olympic on 23 June 1894. Most of the NOC's of the World use this date to focus local interest on the Olympic Movement.
Many NOC used this day to provide additional activities such as sports events, arts and cultural demonstrations, open house activities, fun runs, disables athletes demonstrations, aerobic and dance events, games, drawing and painting activities, t-shirt give aways, relay races by students from many institutions, cycle races, autograph sessions with Olympic athletes, fitness dance by senior citizens, band concerts, lectures on Olympic history, Olympic philately and poster exhibitions, Awards and recognition ceremonies for Olympic athletes and builders, lighting Olympic torches and many other initiatives. Beside these, the Olympic athletes Museum and other groups plan annual promotions of the Olympic Movement NOC Nepal has been following the spirit of IOC in Organizing Olympic Run Day in different cities of the country in different times. In 1997 Olympic Day Run was organized in Birgunj, a southern city of Nepal Terai (low land). Birgunj is a city named after Rana Prime Minister Bir Shamsher. The Olympic Day Run was started from clock Tower of Birgunj and was participated by more this 300 participantes.
On June 24, 1998 Olympic Day Run was organized in background of Mount Fish Tail in Pokhara Valley. It was participated by a large number of Sports lovers, School children, Athletes, Coaches, Sports official and General Public. Olympic Day Run was celebrated in Lumbini, the birth place of Lord Buddha in Terai of western Nepal in 1999. It was inaugurated by Mr. Rukma Shamsher Rana, President of IOC/Nepal and was participated in by more than 700 school children, Athletes, Sports Lover and General Public. Prior to Olympic Day Run School Children also organized picture exhibition related with sports culture and Environment. The certificate for the runners was jointly distributed by president of NOC/Nepal, Mr. Binod Shankar Palikhe, Member Secretary NSC, Mr. Dhurba Bahadur Pradhan, Secretary General NOC/Nepal and Mr. Sagar Pratap Rana, Mayor of Sidhartha Sub Metroplis. The three kilometer run was started from near the international Research Centre in Lumbini and ended at historical Ashok Pillar taking the round of peace plaxe and pond. On June 23, 2000 Olympic Day Run was organized in Biratnagar, an industrial town in Nepalese Terai. Despite heavy rain 500 participants including School children, Athletes, Coaces, sports officials, distinguished Persons and Sports lovers also participated in the Run. Opening the Run, Mr. Rukma Shamsher Rana, NOC/Nepal President read the joint message of former IOC President and Secretary General H.E. Kofi Annan. On the occasion, Mr. Ramesh Chaudra Poudel delivered a welcome speech and Mr. Dhurb K. Timilsina, Vice President NOC/Nepal extended vote of thanks for making the Run a grand success.
The International Olympic Day was observed with a rally here Friday
The Programme organized by Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) in cooperation with Morang District Sport Development Committee under the aegis of International Olympic Committee was celebrated this year as the "Peace and culture year"
Inaugurating the Programme, the President of NOC Rukma Shamsher Rana, on the occasion related the message issued by IOC President Juan Antonio Samarnch and Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan.
The Secretary General of Noc/Nepal Mr Dhurba Bahadur Pradhan, Mayor of Biratnagar Sub-Metropolish, Ramesh Chandra Poudel also attended the functions.
On 23, 2001, Olympic Day Run was celebrated in Mahendra Nagar, Western Town of Nepal. Nearly thousand school children, sports Lovers, Nepal Police, Royal Nepalese Army and many other participated in the Run. Mr. Dhurba Kumar Timilsina the Vice President of NOC/Nepal read the Message for Olympic Day run sent by His Excellency Juan Antonio
Samaranch.
