Celebration of the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace with different events in Lumbini

Nepal Olympic Committee collaborated with the Provincial Sports Council Lumbini to celebrate the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace and organized Lumbini International Peace Marathon. The Chief Guest Governor of Lumbini Province, Honorable. Amik Sherchan, and the President of the NOC, Mr. Jeevan Ram Shrestha, were present at the event to distribute the medals and cash prizes to the winners. The marathon, held at Lumbini, a place of world peace, attracted a large number of participants and spectators, all of whom appreciated the spirit of sportsmanship and peace that the event promoted. President of National Olympic Committee of Srilanka Mr. Suresh Subramaniam and Member Secretary of Lumbini Province Sports Council Mr. Jay Prakash Bhaattari were the Special Guest for the program.

Nepal Army's Khagendra Bahadur Bhat clinched victory in the event.The marathon covered a distance of 42.195 km.Khagendra completed the race in 2 hours 40 minutes and 1 second, beating a field of strong runners from Nepal and Sri Lanka. He was awarded a cash prize of 1 lakh for his outstanding achievement.

Karan Khadka was the second runner to cross the finish line, completing the marathon in 2 hours 42 minutes and 57 seconds, while Sri Lankan runner Amila Sanath Kumar finished third with a time of 2 hours 44 minutes and 25 seconds. Both Karan and Amila received medals and certificates for their commendable performances, along with cash prizes of 50,000 and 25,000 respectively.

In addition to the Lumbini Peace Marathon, a range of activities were organized at Mayadevi Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, to mark The International Day of Sports for Development and Peace. The event saw monks chanting for world peace, a small walkathon, and welcome Speech by NOC President Shrestha, Best wishes by Honorable Sherchan, Importance of the event by Honorary President of NOC Mr. Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan and Closing ceremony by Member Secretary of Lumbini Province Mr. Bhattrai.

The program was jointly organized by the Nepal Olympic Committee and Provincial Sports Development Council Lumbini and supported by Lumbini Development Trust. The event brought together people from different backgrounds, including politicians, sportsmen, monks, journalists, and students, who participated with great enthusiasm.

The speeches and walkathon culminated at the Mayadevi Temple, where oil lamps were lit to signify peace and harmony. The event was a resounding success, with participants expressing their appreciation for the positive energy and peaceful spirit that it generated.

Overall, the Lumbini Peace Marathon and associated events served as a powerful reminder of the potential of sports to promote peace, unity, and understanding among people of different cultures and backgrounds.
